Family Support

Family Support assists families when parents find their ability to nurture their children is impacted by difficulties and stress.

Issues affecting the families may include:

  • isolation
  • challenges in accessing the right services and supports
  • breakdown of relationships and other problems that can result in parenting difficulties domestic violence drug and alcohol misuse.

The program aims to increase the use of positive parenting practices, strengthen the relationship between parents and children, improve knowledge about local services, and expand parents’ supportive social networks.

The service operates within child protection legislation and guidelines and maintains a child focus model of service delivery.

Case Management

Family Support’s Caseworkers provide assistance in a number of ways to meet the individual needs of the family. This can be through home visits, centre-based contact, information sharing, referrals to other services, general counselling, group work and advocacy activities.

Support can be short-term including one-off sessions or assistance ranging from three to six months.

Groups

Parenting and practical skills groups are run throughout the year and offer:

  • support to help parents best meet the needs of their children
  • opportunities for social interaction to decrease isolation and increase sense of community
  • bilingual team members providing language support

Eligibility

Family Support is available to families with dependent children aged 0-17 years, including pregnant women who reside within the service areas including the Local Government Areas (LGAs) of:

  • Inner West
  • Strathfield
  • Sydney
  • Burwood
  • Canada Bay
  • Ashfield
  • Canterbury-Bankstown
  • Fairfield
  • Liverpool
