BariStars: Coffee With Ability

Empowering young people with disabilities through BariStars

At CatholicCare Sydney, we’re passionate about building inclusive communities where everyone is supported to grow, connect, and thrive. BariStars operated as a social support program for people with a disability in Sydney.

As a registered NDIS provider, our commitment extends to creating real opportunities for young people with disabilities to develop life skills, boost confidence, and explore meaningful pathways to employment.

BariStars is CatholicCare Sydney’s social enterprise coffee cart program designed to provide disability support and the chance to gain hands-on experience in hospitality. From coffee-making and customer service to understanding small business operations, BariStars equips participants with practical, transferable skills that prepare them for future job opportunities as a NDIS support service.

Brewing a bright future for himself, BariStars freshly trained barista, Tom, says it best.

I liked learning how to make all the different coffees; flat white, latte, cappuccino. The thing I like most about being a barista is frothing the milk. I enjoy hearing the hissing noise as the milk froths.

What legends says

The Legend has it that 9th-century goat herders noticed the effect caffeine had on their goats, who appeared to "dance" after eating the fruit of the Coffea plant. A local monk then made a drink with the produce and found that it kept him awake at night, thus the original cup of coffee was born.
