Family Spirit

Foster Family

Family Spirit is a new organisation which has been formed by CatholicCare Sydney and Marist180.

In October 2017, Marist180 and CatholicCare Sydney joined together in the space of foster care. The aim of this partnership was to learn and grow from both agencies deep knowledge and expertise in the area of foster care, youth, and family services. We believe that by working together, we can foster better outcomes for vulnerable children, families, and young people.

From this partnership, Family Spirit has grown. It is now a brand new agency which will begin operations in July 2018.

Family Spirit will work in line with the common Catholic heritage and values of both founding agencies. Its vision is to be the leader in permanency solutions in NSW.

The concept of “Family Spirit” is a Marist concept and steeped in Catholic tradition. It means to symbolise acceptance, belonging, and care for everyone. It means to capture our mission, which is and will continue to be to provide a community of support to all families, and help their children to have the best start in life possible.

The services Family Spirit will provide are:

  • Family Support to preserve families
  • Foster Care services to support children who enter the care system, find the safe and appropriate carers that are matched to their cultural and individual needs, and support their families through this transition
  • Family Support services to achieve permanency for children; this may be through:
    • Work to restore these children to their birth families
    • Work to find an appropriate family member who can serve as a Guardian to the children
    • Work towards adoption or Guardianship with a carer or family member
    • Work to support children requiring long term foster care
  • Local domestic adoptions for families considering adoption as an option for their children, and families looking to start a family via adoption
  • Ongoing support and training to our valued foster carers
  • Services for young people who are preparing to exit the foster care system and assistance to transition into independence via:
    • Transitional accommodation
    • Case management and support
