Tree of Hope: World AIDS Day 2024

World AIDs Day is a time to raise awareness, show support and remember those who we’ve lost to AIDS-related illnesses. With this year’s theme, ‘It Starts with Me’, we are encouraged to take action, show compassion, and create an environment and community of support for those impacted by AIDS-related illnesses. At CatholicCare Sydney, we stand with this mission through Tree of Hope, a program that supports individuals and families impacted by HIV.

Tree of Hope is open to anyone affected by HIV, whether you’re on your journey or supporting someone close to you. It’s a place of compassion, where people from all walks of life and beliefs can find acceptance and understanding. With monthly lunches, annual retreats, workshops, and individual support, Tree of Hope creates a caring community where everyone feels like they belong.

Launched over 30 years ago with support from the Sydney Archdiocese, Tree of Hope was founded on the mission of compassion and inclusivity. In this space, people are welcomed as they are, finding friends and encouragement to help them live long and fulfilling lives. With a foundation built on Pastoral care, Tree of Hope provides emotional and practical support, outreach, and a confidential environment that fosters trust and connection.

This space has touched countless lives, as shared by Katie-Rose, a mother whose journey with Tree of Hope began when her son was diagnosed with HIV:

"How blessed was I to gradually get to know and love many folk of all ages and life situations associated with this group. Through regular social, reflective, and spiritual gatherings, we have become strong and caring for each other. If you find yourself in this situation, why don’t you come and join us?”

As we reflect on World AIDS Day, CatholicCare Sydney invites you to explore how Tree of Hope nurtures hope and compassion. Together, we can create a community where everyone feels accepted and supported.
